This past year of 2009 Six $ 1,000 dollar gifts for in need high school seniors attending college were given to selected students at the awards ceremony for the high school.  These were payable in two installments of $ 500 each at the Kiwanis annual picnic in Central Park and upon completion of the student's first successful semester.

HISTORY

The Schenectady Kiwanis Foundation, Inc was established as part of the Kiwanis Club of Schenectady organization for the purpose to honor the memory of deceased members by giving charitable donations.  Specifically, these gifts were meant for needy persons, particularly young people, to help them attain vocational or academic excellence as well as aid handicapped persons in regaining happy useful lives through the assistance of gifts or scholarships to individuals or institutions.  An original precept also included gifting to combat juvenile delinquency.  However, evolving trends with the foundation has more recently paid attention to gift money for deserving students graduating from Schenectady High School to enter college.  The gifting is limited to the income generated from the principal established by those who have donated to the foundation.  Thus, the awards will vary from year to year.

Gifts are given to individuals who live in the City of Schenectady based upon need, academic performance, potential to succeed and other positive quality variables that will influence a student to do well in college.  Personal adversity and volunteerism showing strength of character and determination will be important in making a gift decision.
